EDITORIAL: A journey around the globe!
All good things come to an end and that goes for summer too. Perhaps you made the most of your holidays by trying your hand at plein-air painting, or attending a workshop at one of the many watercolour exhibitions and events around the world? Maybe you finally found the time to tidy your studio from top to bottom? Regardless of what you did over the summer, the end of the holiday period marks the start of a new cycle and provides an opportunity for a fresh start. Self-analysis and casting doubt on what has gone before is a trait most artists have in common: a good artist is one who questions him/herself and is willing to take risks in order to move forward. That’s why in this issue you’ll find a special feature on a subject that is dear to us all: how can I progress, i.e. how can I become a better artist? Some people evolve by looking to the artists of the past for inspiration, while other artists on whom French artist Eugène Isabey’s masterful watercolours have made a strong and lasting impression, are keen to provide the keys to understanding the master’s paintings and give some concrete advice that you can apply in your own work. Just like those that have gone before and those still to come, this issue also gives prominence to artists from all over the world, who each in their own way and with their own unique style, are contributing to the gigantic web that is the world of watercolour today.
That’s why this issue takes you on a journey around the globe, presenting the work of the young Swedish prodigy Nick Alm, as well as the watercolours of Igor Sava, Massimiliano Iocco and, from the other side of the Atlantic, those of Ev Hales and Lizabeth Castellano-King. Finally, the Technical Guide is entirely devoted to the different ways in which you can identify the weaknesses of your watercolours in order to improve them and – who knows? – win competitions!
