MEET THE ARTISTS:
Gina Hawes. This self-taught artist shows great candour in her approach to watercolour. For her, more than technique, a successful painting is grounded in the knowledge of oneself.
Catherine Sommelette: She transcends her floral subjects with delicacy and wet-on-wet painting, turning them into true allegories of painting.
Tracy Male: This American painter loves painting everyday objects, depicting them with freshness and contrasts of light and shadow.
Jerry Zhon: As a young Taiwanese artist, he has chosen his city of Taipei as his main subject. Rather than picturesque views, he uses a palette of greys to reflect the pollution that plagues his city.
Dušan Djukaric: The Serbian painter defines himself as an atmospheric artist.
Akbar Akbari: This Azerbaijani artist delights in capturing the spirit of humanity in his true-to-life portraits. He describes his attraction to the genre.
Toni Belobrajdic: Inspired by impressionist painting, this Sydney-based artist with a passion for light likes to render the landscapes he comes across using a limited palette. He tells us about his approach to watercolour.
William Elliston: This Barcelona-based English painter delights both in rendering light and using vivid colours. He aims to paint on location as often as possible.

Laurent Russ: The French painter loves nature and painting landscapes, in particular travel sketches.
Milind Mulick: One of India’s best known watercolourists, he reveals his vision of watercolour: letting go of technique to gain in simplicity. Portfolio: Petya Taneva. A Russian-born artist living in Bulgaria, her favourite themes are still lifes, which she paints with gentleness and poetry grounded on a rigorous drawing. As comfortable in rendering landscapes as he is with complex still lifes, he always paints freely, simply following his inspiration. THREE watercolours in detail:
We asked three artists, Alexandra Bryska, Jan Min and Jean-Louis Aparicio, to tell us in detail about the genesis, the process and their impressions of a work they hold dear. History:
A look at the life and work of an artist recognised during his lifetime as “one of the greatest watercolourists of our times”.

EDITORIAL
A new year under the sign of water and colour
With this first issue of the new year, your favourite magazine takes on an even more international dimension! Watercolour knows no boundaries and this issue proves that by showcasing artists from different backgrounds and with equally different styles. Let’s begin with Milind Mulick, a well-known master of plein air painting who invites us to follow in his footsteps. On the other side of the pond, discover realism as practised by American artist Tracy Male with her charming still lifes. Further on, enjoy a change of scenery, as we set off on a journey with Akbar Akbari, Petya Taneva and Toni Belobrajdic, three artists with different temperaments but who share the same passion for watercolour. You will also discover the evanescent flowers of Catherine Sommelette, an artist for whom watercolour rhymes with volume, light and sensuality. We will also be taking a look back at the paintings of Edward Seago, probably one of the greatest British watercolourists of the 20th century.
Finally, at the beginning of the magazine you will find all the latest news, from fairs, exhibitions and artists’ news to calls for entries and other worldwide watercolour events. Get the year off to a good start by entering one of the many competitions taking place around the world!
Happy reading and painting,
The editorial team.
