Across Cultures, One Passion: Watercolour
A Global Language
Each new issue of The Art of Watercolour is a journey across borders, styles and sensibilities. What unites our pages is the conviction that watercolour is not only a medium of infinite subtlety, but also a living language spoken all over the world — from Europe to Asia and from the Americas to Oceania. In this September issue, we invite you to rediscover its diversity, its vitality and above all, the community that keeps it alive.
Spotlight on Artists
Our cover story celebrates the refined poetry of Junwei Dai, whose luminous paintings bear witness to memory and fragility. Echoing him, Lai Young-Lin opens the doors to a universe where delicacy meets strength. Canadian artist Jennifer Annesley explores architectural atmospheres with timeless resonance, while Matthew Bird pursues serene realism. Bénédicte Stef-Frisbey, meanwhile, reveals her sensitive vision of misty landscapes.
Voices from the Americas and Britain
From the United States, James Maria confronts time and spirituality in evocative works, while Robin Erickson offers lyrical abstraction full of colour and energy. In Arizona, Stan Kurth cultivates intuitive gestures, showing watercolour as a field for experimentation. In Britain, Peter Cronin revisits plein air traditions with a rigorous two-wash method.
The Richness of Chinese Watercolour
China is particularly well represented: Yan Liang pursues his vast anthropological portrait project, while Xiaochang Zhang paints vanishing towns of his childhood with deep emotional resonance. Their works remind us that watercolour is also testimony and transmission.
Learning and Inspiration
This issue also offers analyses of outstanding works by Ambrin Ling and Peter Jablokow, inviting readers to explore composition, light and meaning. Technical features provide concrete guidance on paper selection and brush types, while the International News section highlights exhibitions, festivals and workshops worldwide.
A Call for Participation
Because watercolour thrives on sharing, we dedicate space to opportunities for involvement. In our Call for Entries, you’ll discover major international competitions and workshops — chances not only to show your work, but to meet artists, learn, and feel part of a worldwide family.
A Collective Adventure
This is the essence of The Art of Watercolour: a window on the world, a mirror of diversity, and a bridge between creators and enthusiasts. Many featured artists once responded to an open call — why not you? Exhibitions, workshops, portfolios: your passion deserves to be shared.
With each issue, we are reminded that watercolour is more than a technique: it is a community without borders, a conversation carried by thousands of voices. May these pages inspire you to paint, explore new directions, and join us in this collective adventure.
