Il y a 75 ans, le Japon capitulait mais à quel prix ?
Dossier La Capitulation du Japon : En nombre de bombes déversées à l’hectare, rares sont les cibles des bombardements de la Seconde Guerre mondiale qui souffrirent autant que l’île d’Iwo Jima, tenue par les Japonais. Dans la mesure où ceux-ci ne pouvaient que s’attendre à une attaque prochaine de l’île, il avait été décidé qu’un bombardement de préparation prolongé ne compromettrait guère une surprise bien aléatoire. Les raids aériens sporadiques commencent en août 1944 mais, durant les 74 jours qui précèdent le débarquement du 19 février 1945, les B-24 Liberator de la 7e Air Force US, basés dans les Mariannes, bombardent quotidiennement les îles Volcano et Bonin, en accordant une attention toute particulière à Iwo Jima… Les débarquements d’Iwo Jima et d’Okinawa constituent ainsi le prélude aux bombardements atomiques de l’archipel nippon…
